How to transition to Agile Testing

Transitioning the testing approach to Agile testing is challenging, but not impossible. Having a good grasp of Agile will certainly help teams in adapting to the changes. Therefore, it is a common practice for organisations to invest in training their employees in Agile. Having an Agile coach to assist in the transition is also a good investment, as having an experienced professional to direct will effectively ingrain the Agile mindset in the team.

Apart from training the teams, training the management is also an important part of the transition, for it is the management who provides the infrastructure necessary for Agile teams to operate in. Organisations often start with a pilot team who will serve as the baseline for setting Agile processes in place. Having a pilot team will also help the company learn about best practices, especially with testing.

Part of transitioning to Agile testing is planning their testing approach and selecting the right tools for managing testing activities. One of the popular development practices and strategies they could consider doing would be Test-Driven Development, wherein the product is built around the tests designed for it. These would be made easier with test management tools – even better if they are integrated with other things such as backlog management and continuous integration. Although there are free tools, there are also better tools that will cost money but will be better to use in the long run.

Transitioning to Agile testing will not just involve the testers themselves, but developers and stakeholders alike. Helping everyone understand how quality is ensured in Agile development will go a long way in making Agile testing work for the team and accept the time and resources needed to make it successful.
