What is Agile to the Scrum Master? – The Agile Fundamentals – Part 1
The Minimum Viable Product and the Agile Fundamentals
The Lean Startup philosophy of the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) relates directly to the fundamentals of Agile development. In this rapidly changing world, getting a product to market as swiftly as possible has become a priority, not just to beat the competition, but also to keep up with digital disruption. However, the product has to be of value to the potential customer base, so quality and understanding what the customer needs is just as vital. Unless you are so ahead of the curve that you have very few or no competitors, like Spacex, you have very little time to take your product from concept to build and deployment.
The MVP is a rather impressive name for a stripped-down product that contains the minimum features required by stakeholders, without any “must-have features” that were demanded up front but really add little or no value to the product as a whole. This often requires a great deal of diplomacy, especially when dealing with the stakeholder who championed the feature in the first place.
Designing and describing an MVP should also be the precursor for any successful agile development project, so that there is already alignment with the customer expectations before the project even begins. As Agile also calls for a “bare-bones” product, most of the Agile fundamentals echo the practices of the MVP. Here are some that are key to successful development, which are also fundamental to MVP design.
